Principal Investigator: Architectural Historian/Historian

Job Description:

Wapsi Valley Archaeology, Inc. has an immediate opening for an Architectural Historian/Historian to join our

This position involves project-based research including survey and analysis in architecture, history, historic preservation, and cultural resource management. Candidates must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s professional qualifications standards for Architectural History and History. The position requires a Master’s degree in architectural history, history, public history, art history, historic preservation, or a closely related field.

Other requirements include at least one years’ experience supervising and completing historic/architectural reconnaissance surveys, intensive surveys, determinations of eligibility, and/or successful nominations to the National Register of Historic Places, preferably in the Midwest. Excellent writing skills are a must. Also required are strong computer skills, communication skills, organizational skills, and ability to work cooperatively as part of a collaborative team. Nuanced understanding and knowledge of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act is desirable. Experience in historic tax credit programs, oral history interviews, GIS, or design of public outreach or planning documents would be welcome.

Responsibilities will include:

Research, fieldwork, analysis, and report preparation for specific research projects, including writing of technical reports, historic context development, National Register nominations, and preparation of public outreach publications and exhibits.

  • Identification, documentation, and evaluation of resources for Section 106 and National Register nomination purposes
    based on field examination, architectural history knowledge, use of published sources, background/archival research at the State Historic Preservation Office and libraries, and writing detailed descriptions of resources using professional terminology.
  • Documentation of buildings and structures according to professional standards, including photography and descriptions of architectural details.
  • Supervision of support staff in carrying out completion of projects.
  • Authoring technical reports that meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Historic Preservation and the standards and requirements of state, federal, and county agencies as well as Wapsi Valley Archaeology, Inc. management.
  • Historic research on architectural and archaeological properties to assist with interpretations and historic context development.
  • Working on multiple projects simultaneously and completing work under set deadlines.
  • Travel as necessary for projects, mainly within the state of Iowa.
