Project Historian

(Full Time Position with Benefits)


Wapsi Valley Archaeology, Inc. seeks a Project Historian to join our professional team. This is a full-time position with benefits including paid vacation, sick leave, health insurance, dental insurance, and holidays.

This position involves project-based research including survey and research in history and architecture.  The position requires a Master’s degree in history, public history, architectural history, art history, historic preservation, or a closely related field.  Excellent history research and writing skills are a must. Understanding of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act is also desired.  Experience supervising and completing historic/architectural reconnaissance surveys, intensive surveys, determinations of eligibility, and/or successful nominations to the National Register of Historic Places, preferably in the Midwest, a plus.  Knowledge of historic tax credit programs, HABS/HAER documentation, oral history interviews, GIS, and/or design of public outreach documents is also desirable. 

Responsibilities may include:

·      Assist with research, fieldwork, analysis, and report preparation for specific research projects, including writing of technical reports, historic context development, National Register nominations, and public outreach publications and exhibits. 

·      Assist with historic context development and historic research on architectural and archaeological properties to facilitate interpretation and evaluation.

·      Assist with identification, documentation, and evaluation of resources for Section 106 and National Register nomination purposes based on field examination, history, and architectural history knowledge, use of published sources, background/archival research at courthouses and libraries, and writing detailed descriptions of resources using professional terminology.

·      Assist with documentation of buildings and structures according to professional standards, including photography and descriptions of architectural details.

·      Helping to author technical reports that meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Historic Preservation and the standards and requirements of state, federal, and county agencies as well as Wapsi Valley Archaeology, Inc. management.

·      Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and complete work under set deadlines.

·      Willingness to work with archaeologists, and to assist with archaeological field projects if needed.

·      Strong computer skills, communication skills, organizational skills, and ability to work cooperatively as part of a collaborative team.

·      Travel as necessary for projects.
