Project Manager/Principal Investigator: Architectural History

Location: Fargo, North Dakota/Moorhead, Minnesota

Salary Range: $65,000.00-$83,000.00

Wapsi Valley Archaeology, Inc. has an immediate opening for a Project Manager/Principal Investigator in Architectural History in the Fargo, North Dakota/Moorhead, Minnesota area. This professional, salaried position will involve working closely with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers staff to facilitate the Fargo-Moorhead Metropolitan Area Flood Risk Management Project, a major, historically unprecedented endeavor in this region. The position will offer a unique opportunity for professional growth in historic preservation and project management.

The Fargo-Moorhead Flood Risk Management Project was initiated in 2012, when the Corps, Metro Flood Diversion Authority, City of Fargo, and the City of Moorhead signed an agreement to construct a diversion channel for the Red River of the North to help protect the metropolitan area from future flood damage. This Project Manager position is being created to assist the federal agency with avoidance and mitigation of adverse effects to historic properties. Resources include historic architecture as well as archaeological sites.

Candidates must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s professional qualifications standards for Architectural History and History. The position requires a Master’s degree in architectural history, history, public history, art history, historic preservation, archaeology, or a closely related field, as well as at least 3 years of research in architectural history/history and 2 years of project management experience. 

Excellent writing skills are a must. Also required are strong communication skills, organizational skills, research skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Solid knowledge of architectural history and history will be necessary for this position. Strong understanding and knowledge of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act is desirable.

Anticipated responsibilities include:

·       Development of mitigation plans and agreements, preparing and refining survey data, overseeing the performance of federal task orders, review of documents, and preparation of presentations and publications to assist with mitigation of adverse effects to cultural resources.

·       Coordinating with and supervision of Wapsi staff and cultural resource service subcontractors/contractors to maintain standards of excellence and ensure completion of the flood risk management project.

·       Assisting with research, evaluation, and mitigation of architectural resources.

·       Development of historic contexts.

·       Working directly with federal agency staff to facilitate the project.

·       Establishing a Wapsi Valley Archaeology office in the Fargo/Moorhead area.
